QUILT WALKABOUT

It may have been a grey, dreary cold day in Duluth but members of the Lake Superior Modern Quilt Guild grabbed their brightest quilts, bundled up, and gathered for a walkabout around Duluth's iconic Aerial Lift Bridge!

Our  g u ild  chose  to  honor  our  namesake  with  this quilt.   Lake  Superior  is  an  ever-present  force  in  our  visual  and  environmental  world.   The  Ojibwe  people  who  lived  here  before  us  called  her  Gitchgami,  or  Huge  Water.   This  Great  Lake  is  a  constant  source  of  inspiration  as   well   as   pure  drinking  water  to  most   who  live  along  her  shoreline.

When our  guild  was  considering  the  parameters  of  this  quilt  challenge,  we  looked  for  a  message  that  was  uniquely  ours  to  share.   Not  only  is  it  amazing  that  this  vast  resource  lies  outside  our  very  front  doors,  but  it  is  vital  to  protect  it.   We  hope  to  see  our  quilt  raise  money  for  a  non-profit  dedicated  to  the  sustainability  and  enjoyment  of  Lake  Superior.

Our  Great  Lake  was  designed  and  completed  entirely  by  LSMQG  members.   Lynn F.  was  the  designer.   Guild members  used  paper piecing,  fusible  appliqué,  and  improv  piecing  in  making  it.   Mary  M.  did  the  needle-turn  appliqué  of  Lake  Superior.   Ruthann  G.  was  the  quilter.

Other  information:   All  the fabrics were founds at Hannah Johnson Fabric; Alane D. formatted the design from the original drawing;  Karen McTavish opened her design studio space to our assembly team on two days; Scott L. did  the binding work;  Text sections  were  completed  by  Susan  A.,  Lynn  F.,  Claudia  L.,  Sue  S. and  Deb  W.

This lake is one of the few that I have been. I think that this lake can be considered as a great tourist spot. I have been through some lakes in the past, but nothing standout as much as this one. I feel like I can really trust people to enjoy this, at least based on my instincts. If you want to go on a picnic, then this is definitely what you should be doing, this is a truly great place.
