QUILT WALKABOUT
It may have been a grey, dreary cold day in Duluth but members of the Lake Superior Modern Quilt Guild grabbed their brightest quilts, bundled up, and gathered for a walkabout around Duluth's iconic Aerial Lift Bridge! Check out the Duluth News Tribune article on the colorful walkabout: Duluth quilters strut stuff in Canal Park |

Lynn Carson Harris Trunk Show, Thursday, October 4th at 6:30 at Hope United Methodist Church: The trunk show is open to the public. Members of the Lake Superior MQG and Northern Lights Guild attend for free. Non-members will be asked to pay a $10.00 admission at the door. Lynn’s trunk show/lecture is titled: “ Do it for the Process”. The description of her lecture follows: "Lynn will share some of her quilts and talk about her journey from the first quilt she made as a teenager in 1976 to her current work. She has found that the steps of making a quilt are often more meaningful to her than the completed quilt. Focusing on the creative process rather than the finished product allows her time in the studio to be filled with play and discovery." Supply lists have been emailed out to all those who have registered for a class. Check your email inbox!!!! And then……………. The most exciting guild news item of our August meeting was the Superior Sunrise drawing. There were 269 tickets in the drawing and the winner was……….. Caroline of Nisswa, MN!!!! When we contacted Caroline she let us know she was in Duluth that day. So we made arrangements to present to her the quilt that night. It was quite an honor for Sue and Ruthann, to be able to present Caroline with her quilt. During our visit with Caroline, she told us the heartwarming story about how she bought her ticket and what winning the quilt meant to her. Earlier in the summer she was in Duluth in regard to a medical situation with a close family member. She was driving by Karen McTavish’s Quilt Studio and, as a new quilter, was inspired to stop in and see what the studio was all about. While there, she saw Alane Davis’ Superior Sunrise quilt and purchased a ticket. Fast forward to the day of our meeting. Caroline was again on her way to Duluth in regard to the family medical issue. She knew it was going to be a hard day. So hard in fact that she called her friend, on her way to Duluth for some encouragement. In that phone call she mentioned, ‘Today is the day of the raffle. If I could just win that quilt, it would mean so much to me!’ and then……….. a few hours later………. we called to say, ‘You won!’. I wish you all could have seen the thankfulness in her eyes when we gave her the quilt. Caroline owns an inn in the Nisswa area. Alane’s quilt will hang in the entry to greet all guests as they arrive. August Challenge: Our August challenge was to create a quilt inspired by a photo. It was truly inspiring to see how our members translated a photo into their own special creation. Thank you to everyone who participated. I know we were all inspired by the variety and beauty of each creation. So all in all, our August meeting was a great way to relax, celebrate summer and enjoy our quilty community!
Next Meeting Looking forward to seeing everyone at the September meeting on Thursday, September 13th, at Harrison Community Center, 3002 W 3rd Street!

Lake Superior Modern Quilt Guild and Northern Lights Machine Quilters Guild are excited to co-host quilter Lynn Carson Harris for a weekend of classes, October 5 & 6. To find out more info and to register, visit HERE ************************************************************************************************************************ FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5 (9am-4pm): STRING THEORY Lynn will teach her method for string piecing with no foundation. With this foolproof technique, there is no extra layer of fabric in the quilt and no paper bits to pick out after the sewing is finished. You will learn the skills needed to add string piecing to your own quilt designs. Bring your scrap bin and prepare to have some fun! SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6 (9am-4pm): INTUITIVE PIECING WITH SOLIDS When using solids, the emphasis is put on the shape of each piece of fabric. The lines and shapes become the focus of the quilt rather than the print of a fabric. The mood of the quilt is set by your piecing and color choice, not by a style of print. Working with free-form, improvisational construction, students will create their own, original quilts using easy to learn design concepts and techniques. This design class is good for the beginning and advanced, traditional and art quilter. Come and join the fun as Lynn shows you easy methods for creating your own original quilts.
