QUILT WALKABOUT
It may have been a grey, dreary cold day in Duluth but members of the Lake Superior Modern Quilt Guild grabbed their brightest quilts, bundled up, and gathered for a walkabout around Duluth's iconic Aerial Lift Bridge! Check out the Duluth News Tribune article on the colorful walkabout: Duluth quilters strut stuff in Canal Park |
Well…..it’s starting to look a bit more like Spring…at least today it is! Read on for a recap of our April meeting. There were no business items to share. Quiltcon2018: Alane and Cheryl gave a recap of their time at Quiltcon. We were able to view some of the quilts they found personally interesting. Alane shared she took a class from Karen Lewis on fabric printing. Karen Lewis is the creator of the Blueberry Park fabric line. Alane is going to share her experience and knowledge with those from the guild who want to participate in a work shop to be held Saturday, August 4th. Quiltcon 2019 will be in Nashville, TN, February 21-24th, 2019. Quiltcon has published the hotels where they have arranged discount rates. You can find the link to this page on the Quiltcon site below. Both Alane and Cheryl suggest, if you are attending Quiltcon, to try to book a hotel close to the venue. Discount rooms tend to go fast. https://www.quiltcon.com/hotels/ The Art of Choosing: Alane shared her method for building a palette for a quilt and auditioning fabrics. Using a focus fabric, she created a variety of fabric pulls from her stash. She demonstrated how the addition or deletion of even a single fabric can make a big change. Alane said she often tries to use the secondary colors in a print to pick fabrics to compliment her focus fabric. Alane demonstrated how helpful it us to use a design wall to audition fabrics. A design wall allows the quilter to step back and see the overall effect. She also shared how a fabric pull for a quilt can be made more interesting via combining a variety of print styles. Quilt A Long: Alane and Cheryl shared their Quilt A Long center medallions which have been pieced through block units 1,2 and 3. Block 2/Log Cabin and Block 3/Chevron Block patterns have both been placed in the Member’s Only Facebook page and the shared Google folder. The Block 3/Chevron Block has three sets of instructions providing three options (paper pieced, templates or rotary cut) for construction. Link to the shared Google folder is below. Remember, this is a sew at your own pace project. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1zzAK9fvgAOFlatYotrUq0JaxIwW06msf Show and Tell: We had a robust Show and Tell. Have you Seen????? Happy April! It doesn't look much like April outside and the temps are frosty for sure. But rest assured, quilty goodness will SPRING UP on Thursday, April 12th at Harrison Community Center, 3002 W 3rd Street. See below for our agenda.
QuitCon recap: Alane and Cheryl will share their experience of Quiltcon 2018. It will be fun to see the experience through their eyes! The Art of Choosing: Alane will share insights about creating an array of fabrics to be used in a quilt project. This is an interactive session. It’s going to be all about PLAYing with fabric! In order to do this, we need your fabrics!!! Just bring a selection of fabrics. (Please make sure they are labeled with your name.) They could be fabrics you are thinking of using for your BOM quilt a long, a pull of fabrics that you are thinking of using in a quilt, a bundle that needs just that one extra fabric or even a pull of fabrics that you aren’t sure how to use. We will play with the fabrics to see how little changes can have big impact. Hopefully, as we play, new ideas for mixing color and pattern will get our juices flowing! Remember this will be FUN! No stressing about choosing these fabrics allowed 😊 LSMQG Block of the Month: Alane has created seven fabulous color way variations of our Quilt a Long. These have been posted on our Member's Only Facebook page. Haven’t seen them yet? You can find them in the photos section of the Facebook page. We have also saved them in the shared folder on the guild Google drive. Sooooooo..........if you click on the link below you’ll find the color way photos, the QAL coloring sheet and instructions for Block One. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1zzAK9fvgAOFlatYotrUq0JaxIwW06msf If you have started on the Quilt a Long and have completed Block One, we'd love to see what you have started. Please bring it to April’s meeting so we can see all the variety of quilty creativity! Haven’t started yet? Don’t worry! This is an ‘at your own pace’ project. Most of all, it is meant to be FUN!!!! Jump in whenever it works for you! Project Pouch: Have you made a pouch or pouches in the past month? Need more zippers to make more pouches? Joan Hunn has volunteered to be our Project Pouch point person. Turn your pouch into Joan so she can keep track of the drawing tickets you've earned. Joan will also have the zippers. Snacks: Lynn Lanier will be bringing us some snacky goodness. Thank you Lynn! For all, we'll prepare both cold and hot water for drinks. Members should provide their own hot beverage fixings. To minimize waste, please bring your own cup or water container. Show and Tell.....can't wait to see what you have all been working on! See you on Thursday, April 12th at Harrison Community Center, 3002 W 3rd Street, from 6:00-8:00. |
