QUILT WALKABOUT
It may have been a grey, dreary cold day in Duluth but members of the Lake Superior Modern Quilt Guild grabbed their brightest quilts, bundled up, and gathered for a walkabout around Duluth's iconic Aerial Lift Bridge! Check out the Duluth News Tribune article on the colorful walkabout: Duluth quilters strut stuff in Canal Park |
Well…..it’s starting to look a bit more like Spring…at least today it is! Read on for a recap of our April meeting. There were no business items to share. Quiltcon2018: Alane and Cheryl gave a recap of their time at Quiltcon. We were able to view some of the quilts they found personally interesting. Alane shared she took a class from Karen Lewis on fabric printing. Karen Lewis is the creator of the Blueberry Park fabric line. Alane is going to share her experience and knowledge with those from the guild who want to participate in a work shop to be held Saturday, August 4th. Quiltcon 2019 will be in Nashville, TN, February 21-24th, 2019. Quiltcon has published the hotels where they have arranged discount rates. You can find the link to this page on the Quiltcon site below. Both Alane and Cheryl suggest, if you are attending Quiltcon, to try to book a hotel close to the venue. Discount rooms tend to go fast. https://www.quiltcon.com/hotels/ The Art of Choosing: Alane shared her method for building a palette for a quilt and auditioning fabrics. Using a focus fabric, she created a variety of fabric pulls from her stash. She demonstrated how the addition or deletion of even a single fabric can make a big change. Alane said she often tries to use the secondary colors in a print to pick fabrics to compliment her focus fabric. Alane demonstrated how helpful it us to use a design wall to audition fabrics. A design wall allows the quilter to step back and see the overall effect. She also shared how a fabric pull for a quilt can be made more interesting via combining a variety of print styles. Quilt A Long: Alane and Cheryl shared their Quilt A Long center medallions which have been pieced through block units 1,2 and 3. Block 2/Log Cabin and Block 3/Chevron Block patterns have both been placed in the Member’s Only Facebook page and the shared Google folder. The Block 3/Chevron Block has three sets of instructions providing three options (paper pieced, templates or rotary cut) for construction. Link to the shared Google folder is below. Remember, this is a sew at your own pace project. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1zzAK9fvgAOFlatYotrUq0JaxIwW06msf Show and Tell: We had a robust Show and Tell. Have you Seen????? I ma happy to know that you're busy creating great things lately, and I'll be waiting for all these stuff to happen. Reading your experience at the meeting, it seems like a lot of information have been discussed and I am so happy that it became even more productive! I was actually excited to see the result of the things you will do after the meeting because after that, I am sure that you'll get busy executing all things that were discussed on the meeting. I am already looking forward for this one!
