QUILT WALKABOUT
It may have been a grey, dreary cold day in Duluth but members of the Lake Superior Modern Quilt Guild grabbed their brightest quilts, bundled up, and gathered for a walkabout around Duluth's iconic Aerial Lift Bridge! Happy Holidays to all! We had a wonderful Holiday Party on Thursday, December 14th at Harrison Community Center. The meeting started with a scrumptious dinner with lasagna entrees graciously provided by Denise and Rosemary . A full complement of hors d’oeuvres, salads, breads and desserts rounded out our menu. Thanks to all who brought something to share! After dinner we had a Saran Wrap Ball Christmas Game that challenged our speed, dexterity and ability to roll doubles. Thank you Claudia for wrapping up all the goodies and making our evening fun! Thank you Robin for contributing the dice for our game! We did have a bit of business to conduct. A reminder was made regarding 2018 membership renewals. If you haven’t yet renewed your membership you can do so via this link (scroll to bottom of page): http://www.lakesuperiormqg.com/membership.html It was announced that a second email would be sent providing the link to the 2017 membership survey. Also, the link would be posted on the Member’s Only Facebook page. Cheryl announced a quilt raffle is being held by Karen McTavish’s Quilt Studio to benefit to First Witness Child Advocacy Center. The quilt being raffled is Scott’s ‘Rey and BB-8’ quilt which was quilted by Frank Palmer. Tickets can be purchased at McTavish Quilting Studio. I think everyone must have been very, very good this year because their ‘Santa’ made them some great ‘little gifts’! The link to see all the handmade goodness is below. Here is a peek of what our members have been stitching up! These finished quilts are done just in time for winter. Can you believe it's November already! 2017 is just flying by! The temperatures have definitely turned toward winter and now, with daylight savings time gone, the nights will be long.
Well, we have a solution for that! Join us Thursday, November 9th from 6:00 to 8:00 at Karen McTavish's Quilt Studio for a warm night of sparkling conversation and beautiful displays of creativity. Agenda is below. Guild News
Demo/Teaching Moment Quilting with Rulers: Ever wonder what people mean when they say their quilting was 'ruler work'? Ever wonder, 'how do you quilt with a ruler on a domestic machine?' Ruthann will share with us a short video and her experience working with quilting rulers. She will also bring with her quilting rulers and her machine equipped with a ruler foot. If want to try quilting with a ruler, please bring a small quilt sandwich to the meeting. Show and Tell We have had an Autumn, full of quilty inspiration....Donalee's Improv with Intent class....Jamie Swanson's Luminary Quilt class....If you have a piece from either class to share, we'd love to see it. Please bring it to the meeting on Thursday (completed or in progress). It would be fun to get a group photo! Then of course there's all the goodness you all have been working on the past month. We want to see it all! See you Thursday, November 9th, from 6:00 to 8:00 at Karen McTavish's Quilting Studio, 1831 East 8th Street  Our last challenge of 2017 is the Fat Quarter Challenge Secret Swap. That long title says it all- a challenge that’s a swap with an exchange at our holiday party!!
To join in the fun just bring a fat quarter of your own fabric to the October meeting. We will randomly and secretly swap fabric and you’ll go home with your partner’s FQ and the challenge to make “something(s)” for your partner using their own fabric. The goal is to use as much of the fat quarter as possible, adding in your own fabrics, as desired/needed. The “swapping back” of finished item(s) will take place in two months at our December 14th Holiday meeting. Please bring your creation(s) wrapped and tagged. To help with ideas as to what to make for your partner, at the October meeting each swapper will complete an info card (see attachment) with their likes, dislikes and suggestions for possible item(s) they would like made for them from their FQ, such as pouch, mug rug, pincushion, thread catcher, mini quilt, needlebook, project bag…..etc. Feel free to print out and complete the info card and bring it to the meeting along with your fabric. There will also be info cards available to fill out at the meeting. We have started a Pinterest board called “The Little Things”, accessible HERE Please pin ideas or tutorials that you find. If you are on Instagram, you might want to check out all the swapping fun at #thelittlethingsswap2017. Not able to attend the guild meeting on October 12th? Just send a FQ and completed info card to the meeting with a guild mate and we’ll be sure to include you in the challenge/swap. Find the info card HERE. Our weekend class started Friday night with a Trunk Show by Donalee Kennedy, an artist and quilter from Bayfield, Wisconsin. She shared her amazing pieces that she has created and talked about her studies with Nancy Crow. After the Trunk Show it was our turn to start improv-ing with intent! Before sitting down at our machines Donalee covered design principles, and talked about color and contrast. Then she set us free to start working without printed patterns. Each person started cutting, sewing, standing back and looking, and kept going. It was a wonderful class that challenged everyone in different ways. Some images from August's meeting....  Members were given a color and shape and their challenge was to incorporate them into a mini-quilt. Members shared about their process and many told of new techniques and skills they used in creating their mini.   Can you believe that August is here already? August, that month where summer is still with us but Fall makes it's presence known from day to day. The month of purple wildflowers, gold and brown cone flowers, ripe tomatoes and just a hint of leaf color on the weaker trees.
We are going to celebrate the month with our annual picnic meeting! Before going into the details of the meeting, remember that our meeting location will be at Harrison Community Center at 3002 W 3rd Street. Take the 27th Avenue West exit from I 35, go north (up the hill) until 3rd Street, turn left. Go three blocks (past Creations Quilt Shop), you will see the center on your left. The parking lot is on the West side of the baseball fields. You may also park on the street. We will open our meeting with our Shape/Color show and tell. If you still have your paint chip and shape that you drew please bring them. Weather permitting this portion of the meeting will be outside so we can see everyone's creation. We'll be hanging the quilts up so that everyone can see them during the opening social time. We will also do a mini show and tell where each quilter can briefly tell what shape and color they had, what inspired their creation and any joys/challenges the challenge presented. Everyone who brought a completed challenge mini will be rewarded with a prize. For those who want to swap, please see Rosemary Tyson as you arrive. I can't wait to see all the wonderful mini quilts! We will then move inside for Root Beer floats and to play 2 to 3 rounds of Left-Right-Center and enjoy our picnic. There is no 'official' snack sign up for August. We encourage members to bring something to share so we can have a 'snacky' picnic bounty. For our rounds of Left-Right-Center, the 'ante' to play is one Fat Quarter of quilt shop quality fabric. So if we have enough time to play three rounds then you will need to bring three fat quarters so you have an 'ante' for each round. I wonder who will go home with an arm load of fat quarters?!? We will have a short update of guild news. Remember, registration for Jaime Swanson's Luminary class opens during the August meeting. Cost to members is $25 and that includes the pattern. Of course we will have our regular show and tell. I know you all have been sewing! Bring your creation to show and inspire us all. See you on Thursday, August 10th, 6:00-8:00, at Harrison Community Center, 3002 W 3rd Street.  Here are all the details for the August Paintchip/Shape Challenge!
- We drew one shape and one color each at the May meeting. You can draw in June if you were not there, or request that I draw for you. - We will document what you draw so we can remind you in case you lose them. - You must use the color and shape on the front of your quilt. - You may add one color, and if desired, a neutral as well. The challenge lends itself well to solids, but that is not required, mono prints or low volume would also work. - Other shapes can be used, but the drawn shape must be the predominant one. - Your quilt should be 12 - 24 inches on each side, must be quilted and either faced or bound. - The back can be whatever fabric and design you'd like to use. - Those who wish to swap will be able to do so at the August meeting. Your quilt must be at the meeting to be eligible for swap. We will not draw swap partners now. - Esch House Quilts has some great inspiration!
