Learn how to take a traditional Double Wedding Ring Quilt design and give it a modern interpretation. Leslie says that yours will not be your Grandmother's Double Wedding Ring!

Using bold prints, solids, and more from your fabric collection, you will bring a modern look to the traditional Double Wedding Ring pattern.

Learn how to:

  • Piece the key parts of the DWR patterns: arcs, corner blocks, melons and backgrounds

  • Create templates from transparent plastic such as mylar sheets if you want to convert a paper pattern to a sturdier medium

  • Mark fabric for sewing

  • Determine value when choosing colors

  • Use your design wall to determine color placement that makes you happy

  • Use fussy cut and/or improv techniques to make impressive effects

Pattern & Templates

You provide your own pattern for this class. There are DWR patterns available at most quilt shops and on the internet. Leslie's set of templates will also be available to share for drawing on fabric.

Heavy duty clear plastic templates will simplify the process and help with fussy cutting fabric. Convert paper templates to plastic using a product like mylar which is available at most quilt shops and craft shops. Some DWR patterns include clear acrylic templates at an added cost. You can pin and cut from paper templates if you aren't sure how committed you are to making more.

Fabrics

To make a bold non-traditional DWR, your range of fabric needs will depend upon your overall design choice. Lots of negative space might only require two fabrics. Totally scrappy could be your whole tub of

scraps.

You have the 2.5" center blocks, arcs that are 12" long, large melon is 14.5", and the center needs a 12" square of whole or scrap pieces. One DWR is about 22" pieced. A table runner is 22" by 36". A foursome is a 36" square.

The design cuts, because of the arcs, do waste fabric so bring a generous amount. You might want enough fabric pieces to create 4 or maybe 5 templates; they include curved corners, small and large melon patches, block corners, wedges and arc (replaces wedges).

Design Wall - Required for this class

Bring your own design wall to this class. We recommend a wall measuring at least 40 X 40 inches. You can make an inexpensive design wall using flannel or quilt batting. There are many examples on the internet.

Check out Just Get It Done Quilts website for tips for 7 fast & easy design walls for big & small spaces.

To hold up your design wall, you can use Command tape, Command hooks and blue painters tape on the walls during our class. (Command is a 3M product and can be found in most craft aisles of stores).

Sewing Machine & Notions

  • Sewing machine (including required cords and foot pedal)

  • Heavy duty extension cord to use with your sewing machine and your iron

  • Fabric scissors

  • Thread snips

  • Additional scissors for cutting template plastic if you are making a template

  • 50 weight thread in a neutral color to go with your fabrics

  • Marking pencils for both light and dark fabrics or frixion pen or No.2 pencils

  • Pins

  • Fine-tip permanent marker

  • Medium-sized cutting mat, rotary cutter, and 12" or larger square acrylic ruler

  • Iron and ironing pad

  • Needles for hand piecing, if you prefer
