Susan Pavlatos is an accomplished artist, a successful business woman, a community activist, wife and mother. She attended the University of Duluth and majored in art. Ms. Pavlatos was selected "Teacher of the Year" in 1981 by Duluth Community Schools. She is a Duluth native with an affinity for its people and its natural beauty. She owned and operated her own art and framing gallery for many years.

Sue works in watercolor, collage, oils and acrylics. Her medium of choice is watercolor. The natural beauty and man-made structures of the Northland often provide the subject of her paintings. As Sue says, "Life is a walk in the woods." Her art can be viewed locally at Lizzards and Art Dock galleries in Duluth.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Be ready to try something new!

In this workshop, we will broaden our understanding and use of color. Through the use of paper, paint, and fabric, Sue will guide us in learning how colors work together to create a mixed media design--a paper quilt block, if you will. The color and design concepts explored in this class will help us approach and use color in new ways in our own future quilt designs.

No sewing will be done in this class--no sewing machine needed!

SUPPLIES

Sue will provide assorted paints, brushes, glue, paper and magazines for collage.

You will need to bring:

1. Four to five small containers for the paint. We will be using 3 colors plus white. Containers should have a cover and hold 2-3 cups of liquid. An example might be the size of a "take out salad" container.

2. Fabric from your stash. Bring 4-8 pieces of fabric each measuring at least of 8 inches X 8 inches and a quart-size plastic bag of assorted bits and pieces of fun fabric. We strongly suggest a mix of fabrics in light, medium and dark values for contrast.

3. Two pairs of scissors. One for cutting fabric and one for paper.

4. A paint shirt.

5. Your lunch and beverage.
