Lynn’s trunk show/lecture is titled: “ Do it for the Process”. The description of her lecture follows: "Lynn will share some of her quilts and talk about her journey from the first quilt she made as a teenager in 1976 to her current work. She has found that the steps of making a quilt are often more meaningful to her than the completed quilt. Focusing on the creative process rather than the finished product allows her time in the studio to be filled with play and discovery." Supply lists have been emailed out to all those who have registered for a class. Check your email inbox!!!! And then……………. The most exciting guild news item of our August meeting was the Superior Sunrise drawing. There were 269 tickets in the drawing and the winner was……….. Caroline of Nisswa, MN!!!! When we contacted Caroline she let us know she was in Duluth that day. So we made arrangements to present to her the quilt that night. It was quite an honor for Sue and Ruthann, to be able to present Caroline with her quilt. During our visit with Caroline, she told us the heartwarming story about how she bought her ticket and what winning the quilt meant to her. Earlier in the summer she was in Duluth in regard to a medical situation with a close family member. She was driving by Karen McTavish’s Quilt Studio and, as a new quilter, was inspired to stop in and see what the studio was all about. While there, she saw Alane Davis’ Superior Sunrise quilt and purchased a ticket. Fast forward to the day of our meeting. Caroline was again on her way to Duluth in regard to the family medical issue. She knew it was going to be a hard day. So hard in fact that she called her friend, on her way to Duluth for some encouragement. In that phone call she mentioned, ‘Today is the day of the raffle. If I could just win that quilt, it would mean so much to me!’ and then……….. a few hours later………. we called to say, ‘You won!’. I wish you all could have seen the thankfulness in her eyes when we gave her the quilt. Caroline owns an inn in the Nisswa area. Alane’s quilt will hang in the entry to greet all guests as they arrive. August Challenge: Our August challenge was to create a quilt inspired by a photo. It was truly inspiring to see how our members translated a photo into their own special creation. Thank you to everyone who participated. I know we were all inspired by the variety and beauty of each creation. So all in all, our August meeting was a great way to relax, celebrate summer and enjoy our quilty community!
Next Meeting Looking forward to seeing everyone at the September meeting on Thursday, September 13th, at Harrison Community Center, 3002 W 3rd Street!

Lake Superior Modern Quilt Guild and Northern Lights Machine Quilters Guild are excited to co-host quilter Lynn Carson Harris for a weekend of classes, October 5 & 6. To find out more info and to register, visit HERE ************************************************************************************************************************ FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5 (9am-4pm): STRING THEORY Lynn will teach her method for string piecing with no foundation. With this foolproof technique, there is no extra layer of fabric in the quilt and no paper bits to pick out after the sewing is finished. You will learn the skills needed to add string piecing to your own quilt designs. Bring your scrap bin and prepare to have some fun! SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6 (9am-4pm): INTUITIVE PIECING WITH SOLIDS When using solids, the emphasis is put on the shape of each piece of fabric. The lines and shapes become the focus of the quilt rather than the print of a fabric. The mood of the quilt is set by your piecing and color choice, not by a style of print. Working with free-form, improvisational construction, students will create their own, original quilts using easy to learn design concepts and techniques. This design class is good for the beginning and advanced, traditional and art quilter. Come and join the fun as Lynn shows you easy methods for creating your own original quilts. Don’t forget….if you have made a pouch for Project Pouch, bring it to the meeting so it can donated. Please take a moment to get to know one of our fellow guild members, Denise! Wow, it is a little intimidating to be asked to be Quilter of Month! But I’ll jump in with some brief personal bio and some pictures of my quilt journey. I have been sewing since I was in about 4th grade – likely starting with a Girl Scout badge or helping my mother make the many clothes she completed for her four girls (and occasionally her three sons!). I have good memories of helping make drapes, recover sofa and my mom helping me start sewing real clothes. I signed up for HomeEc classes (oh…..thoseboring aprons….) as I soon figured out that my dad would buy fabric but not often new clothes (admittedly seven children needing clothes stretched a budget). So I was first and foremost a garment sewer - - making work clothes, Frostline kits (do you remember?), and then clothes for my three kids. Some of you remember I made a wedding dress for my middle daughter a couple years ago. My first quilt was a wonky patchwork quilt when my son was born. I don’t think it has survived….. But from there I did make many baby quilts, and focused on a lot of cutesy applique wall hangings and quilts. When we moved to Houston, I started “real” quilts and handquilted a couple of traditional quilts for my daughters (in fact one took at least two Christmas to give as partially completed gift). I’ve made quilts for each of my siblings and many of their first grandchildren. In the last five years I have gradually become more contemporary, even when following traditional patterns. I bought myself a long-arm as my retirement gift to myself and have greatly enjoyed improving my skills. I don’t hire out, but I am probably making some dent in investment. I like quilting charity quilts such as many created by group at church to gift to initial residents of Steve O’Neil housing project. Mostly it is a great creative outlet and I like luxury of working hour or two at my leisure. Here are some samples (some of which you may recognize from past show-and-tells). Some of many baby quilts for grand-nieces and nephews Several Charity quilts made often with friends Three matching quilts for granddaughter and her two new step-sisters. Three wedding-ring quilts for each of the three kids (last one was quite modern after collaborating with artsy daughter!) Not the easiest quilt to learn paper piecing! But a great wall hanging. And some more of my work: Thank you, Denise, for sharing part of your quilting journey with us and for sharing some of your fabulous work!
Well…..it’s starting to look a bit more like Spring…at least today it is! Read on for a recap of our April meeting. There were no business items to share. Quiltcon2018: Alane and Cheryl gave a recap of their time at Quiltcon. We were able to view some of the quilts they found personally interesting. Alane shared she took a class from Karen Lewis on fabric printing. Karen Lewis is the creator of the Blueberry Park fabric line. Alane is going to share her experience and knowledge with those from the guild who want to participate in a work shop to be held Saturday, August 4th. Quiltcon 2019 will be in Nashville, TN, February 21-24th, 2019. Quiltcon has published the hotels where they have arranged discount rates. You can find the link to this page on the Quiltcon site below. Both Alane and Cheryl suggest, if you are attending Quiltcon, to try to book a hotel close to the venue. Discount rooms tend to go fast. https://www.quiltcon.com/hotels/ The Art of Choosing: Alane shared her method for building a palette for a quilt and auditioning fabrics. Using a focus fabric, she created a variety of fabric pulls from her stash. She demonstrated how the addition or deletion of even a single fabric can make a big change. Alane said she often tries to use the secondary colors in a print to pick fabrics to compliment her focus fabric. Alane demonstrated how helpful it us to use a design wall to audition fabrics. A design wall allows the quilter to step back and see the overall effect. She also shared how a fabric pull for a quilt can be made more interesting via combining a variety of print styles. Quilt A Long: Alane and Cheryl shared their Quilt A Long center medallions which have been pieced through block units 1,2 and 3. Block 2/Log Cabin and Block 3/Chevron Block patterns have both been placed in the Member’s Only Facebook page and the shared Google folder. The Block 3/Chevron Block has three sets of instructions providing three options (paper pieced, templates or rotary cut) for construction. Link to the shared Google folder is below. Remember, this is a sew at your own pace project. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1zzAK9fvgAOFlatYotrUq0JaxIwW06msf Show and Tell: We had a robust Show and Tell. Have you Seen????? We’ve set some dates for sewing at Harrison Community Center. They are posted on our Member’s Only Facebook page. Dates set are:
Saturday, May 5th, 9:00 PM -5:00 PM Open Sew plus Alane plans to attend for those who may want help with their Quilt a Long blocks Friday, June 22nd, 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM Open Sew Saturday, August 4th, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Fabric Printing Workshop with Alane Davis Friday, November 9th, 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM Open Sew Saturday, December 1st, 9:00 AM -5:00 PM Open Sew Hope to see many at the Sew In on Saturday, May 5th.
